AKRON, Iowa | A.J. Nemesio had three touchdown passes to lead Akron-Westfield to a 26-0 win over Woodbury Central in Class A District 1 opener Friday.
Nemesio opened the scoring with a 23-yard strike to Damien Ericson with 58 seconds left in the first quarter to give the hosts a 6-0 lead.
A-W then executed an on-side kick, setting up a short drive that ended with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Nemesio to Reagan Frankl.
After a botched punt attempt by Woodbury Central, Akron-Westfield completed another short scoring drive with a burst up the middle from six yards out by Brady Bergman. Nemesio connected with Frankl on the two-point conversion to give the Westerners a 20-0 advantage.
Wildcat quarterback Carter Schultzen led a drive to the Westerner five-yard line in the closing seconds of the first half. The drve and the half ended with a blocked field goal by the Westerners.
Ericson hauled in a seven-yard pass from Nemesio with 1:01 remaining in the third quarter to account for the only scoring of the second half.
Nemesio rushed for 133 yards and passed for 263 yards and was picked off twice by the Wildcats. Blake Erdmann paced Woodbury Central's defense with 10 tackles.
A-W (2-1 overall, 1-0 District) faces Lawton-Bronson in District action on Friday. Woodbury Central which falls to 0-1 in District and 1-2 overall, hosts Gehlen Catholic on Friday.
WESTERN CHRISTIAN 36, ALTA-AURELIA 27: Caleb Harmsen passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as he helped rally the No. 5 ranked Wolfpack to a win over the Warriors in a Class 1A District 1 opener in Aurelia, Iowa Friday.
Western Christian (2-1) trailed 27-21 in the fourth quarter but tied the game on a one-yard keeper by Harmsen with 6:16 left in regulation. The Wolfpack registered a safety on Alta-Aurelia's next offensive play to take a 29-27 lead, then added an insurance score on a pass from Harmsen to Carter Kooi.
Quarterback Logan McCoy three a pair of touchdown passes for Alta-Aurelia (1-2).
HMS 27, SOUTH O’BRIEN 14: Brett Wohlert had 215 yards of total offense and accounted for three touchdowns as the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn football team defeated South O’Brien 27-14 on Friday in Paullina.
Wohlert completed 6 of 13 passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 123 yards and scored on a 3-yard run for HMS (1-2).
Clayton Leng ran for 165 yards on 25 carries and scored on a 55-yard run for South O’Brien (0-3).
STORM LAKE 35, ALGONA 34: The No. 7 Tornadoes stopped a two-point conversion with 1:44 left in the fourth quarter then held on for a win in a Class 3A District 1 opener in Storm Lake, Iowa Friday.
Storm Lake (3-0) took the lead with :46 left in the third quarter on a 12-yard run by Manny Chavez. The Bulldogs got a 10-yard run from Wyatt Wagner in the fourth quarter but had a pass to take the lead stopped.
Brayden Hoops scored two rushing touchdowns while Lamar Mulgae had 95 yards rushing and scored once.
SPIRIT LAKE 49, LE MARS 12: Kyler Rieck ran for a pair of touchdowns and caught a pass for another to lead the Indians to a win over the Bulldogs in a Class 3A District 1 opener in Spirit Lake, Iowa Friday.
Spirit Lake (3-0) got three touchdown passes and a run for a score from quarterback Nicholas Christensen. Le Mars (1-2) got two touchdown passes from Tate Westhoff to Ben Wadle.
The win snapped a 12-game win string for the Bulldogs over Spirit Lake dating back to 1996.
WEST SIOUX 56, LAWTON-BRONSON 12: Hunter Dekkers passed for 193 yards and four touchdowns as third-ranked West Sioux won its district opener over Lawton-Bronson.
Dekkers hit Zach Hulshof twice and also connected on touchdown strikes to Chase Koopmans and Victor Hernandez.
Hernandez finished with 91 yards rushing and a touchdown while Jake Lynott had 80 yards rushing and one touchdown. Koopmans also scored a rushing touchdown for the Falcons.
Hasten Michaels scored both touchdowns for Lawton-Bronson, one receiving and one rushing.
WESTWOOD 26, MVAO/COU 20: Braulio Munoz ran for 107 yards and Westwood held on to defeat MVAO/COU 26-20 on Friday in Mapleton.
J.T. Gengler ran for two touchdowns for Westwood (2-1).
Ely Fundermann ran for 182 yards and scored on runs of 2, 9 and 70 yards for MVAOCOU (0-3).
Sean Westergaard scored on a 35-yard run with 2:18 left to give Westwood a 26-20 lead. MVAOCOU drove to the Westwood 30-yard line but had a pass fall incomplete in the endzone on the final play of the game.
HINTON 27, UNITY CHRISTIAN 15: Wyatt Stuckey ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries as the Hinton football team defeated Unity Christian 27-15 on Friday in Hinton.
Stuckey scored on runs of one and five yards for Hinton (2-1). Brennan Sitzmann ran for 71 yards and also had two touchdown runs covering three and six yards.
Brandon Visser had two touchdown passes covering 25 and 17 yards for Unity Christian (0-3).
RIDGE VIEW 45, NORTH UNION 0: Jake Kliegl and Jake Mitchell combined for 286 rushing yards and three touchdowns as the Ridge View football team defeated North Union 45-0 on Friday in Holstein.
Kliegl ran for 146 yards on 14 carries and scored on an 81-yard run for Ridge View (2-1). Mitchell ran for 140 yards on 15 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 45 and 10 yards.
NEWELL-FONDA 25, GT/R-A 22: Jesse Hack rushed for 210 yards and four touchdowns to help No. 5 Newell-Fonda fend off Graetttiner-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire in a 8-man District 1 opener in Newell, Iowa Friday.
Hack scored on runs of 52, 48 and twice from three yards as Newell-Fonda won for the third time in as many games. The Titans lost for the first time after winning their first two games.
SIOUX CENTER 21, CENTRAL LYON/GL-R 14: Cade Bleeker passed for 185 yards and hit Brandan Zeutenhorst three times for touchdowns to lead the No. 5 Warriors to a win over the Lions in a Class 2A District 1 opener for each team Friday in Sioux Center, Iowa.
Bleeker hit Zeutenhorst on scoring strikes in each of the first three quarters covering six, 34 and 20 yards to give the Warriors (3-0) a 21-0 lead.
Lucas Nagel ran for a touchdown and passed for another to pull Central Lyon/GL-R (0-3) within seven points in the closing minutes.
DENISON-SCHLESWIG 31, ATLANTIC 28: Drew Polzin hit Cesar Rodriguez for a 14-yard touchdown pass with 54 seconds left in regulation to lift the Monarchs to a 31-28 win over the Trojans in a Class 3A District 7 opener played in Denison, Iowa Friday.
Atlantic (2-1) had taken a 28-23 lead with 1:47 left on a 53-yard pass from Jaxson Eden to Tyler Moen. Both Eden and Polzin passed for two touchdowns while Luke Staley ran for a pair of scores for the Monarchs (3-0).
HUMBOLDT 17, SPENCER 14: Lucas Volt kicked a 22-yard field goal with 2:15 left in the fourth quarter to give the the Wildcats a win over the Tigers in a Class 3A District 1 opener in Spencer Friday.
Cade Hopkins and Isaiah Spencer each scored a touchdowns for the Tigers (1-2).
GEHLEN CATHOLIC 35, WEST MONONA 6: Adam Ellensohn ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns as the 10th-ranked (A) Gehlen Catholic football team defeated West Monona 35-6 on Friday in Onawa.
Cole Wiltgen completed 18 of 25 passes for 198 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Gehlen (3-0). Xavier Roberts caught eight passes for 113 yards.
Dylan Collison ran for 81 yards on 19 carries and scored the lone touchdown for West Monona (2-1).
HARTINGTON CC 61, TWIN RIVER 6: Jackson Eickhoff scored three touchdowns and Jacob Keiser two for Hartington Cedar Catholic in its win over Twin River.
The Trojans defense limited Twin River to 72 total yards from scrimmage.
Cedar Catholic quarterbacks Matthew Schaefer and Dain Whitmire each completed one pass and both went for touchdowns.
ST. FRANCIS 22, WYNOT 20: Lucas Thingstad ran for 119 yards as the Wynot football team fell to Humphrey St. Francis 22-20 in overtime on Friday in Humphrey.
St Francis improves to 3-0 while Wynot falls to 1-2.
BLOOMFIELD 48, RANDOLPH 12: Quinten Moles ran for 242 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Bloomfield football team downed Randolph 48-12 on Friday in Bloomfield.
Moles had 34 carries and scored on runs of five and one yard for Bloomfield (3-0).
Randolph falls to 1-1.
TRI-VALLEY 27, VERMILLION 7: Landon Freeman rushed eight times for 103 yards and two touchdowns as fifth-ranked Tri-Valley (Class 11A) defeated Vermillion on Friday.
Freeman also returned an interception for a touchdown.
Rylan Pratt carried the ball 31 times for 174 yards and a touchdown for Vermillion.
TEA 44, EPJ 0: Carter Slykhuis ran for 136 yards and three touchdowns as the second-ranked (A) Tea football team defeated Elk Point-Jefferson 44-0 on Friday in Elk Point.
Slykhuis scored on runs of 4, 14 and 20 yards for Tea (3-0).
Tyler Leif led EP-J (1-2) with 54 rushing yards on seven carries.
