AVOCA, Iowa | Western Christian scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to rally from a 10-7 deficit and defeat AHST 28-18 in a first-round Class 1A playoff game in Avoca, Iowa Friday.
Ben Granstra rushed for two scores including a go-ahead five-yard run midway through the third quarter to put the Wolfpack up 14-10. Granstra had 201 yards on 33 carries.
Western Christian quarterback Caleb Harmsen also threw two touchdown passes, hitting Justin Bleeker for a 23-yard TD in the first quarter and Carter Kooi for a five-yard strike in the fourth frame.
Western Christian (8-2) will take on No. 1 ranked West Lyon in a second round game which will be played in Inwood, Iowa Friday.
GEHLEN CATHOLIC 34, SOUTHWEST VALLEY 14: The Jays knocked off No. 2 Southwest Valley in a first-round Class A playoff game played in Corning, Iowa Friday.
Isaac Hebrst had a 47-yard kickoff return on the opening kickoff to take the ball into Southwest Valley territory and Adam Ellensohn ran 10 yard to cap off the early drive and put Gehlen (8-2) 6-0.
Isaac Freking added a five-yard run later in the first quarter and caught the PAT pass to put Gehlen up 14-0. Ellensohn added a one-yard run later in the half to give the Jays a 28-0 lead.
Cole Wiltgen had two touchdown passes, hitting Herbst and Elijah Freking for scores. The Jays will take on Council Bluffs St. Albert in a second round game next Friday at a site to be determined.
ST. ALBERT 27, WESTWOOD 0: The No. 5 Falcons kept the Rebels offense in check and made the most of three first-half touchdowns to win a Class A first-round playoff game in Council Bluffs, Iowa Friday.
Kyle Barnes scored on a 53-yard run in the first quarter to put St. Albert up 7-0 and Barnes hooked up with Tyler Blaha for a 25-yard TD pass in the second quarter to up the lead to 14-0. Barnes added a 25-yard pass for Andrew Hanafan before the half and a 20-0 St. Albert lead.
Blaha added a 13-yard reception in the second half. The Falcons (9-1) will host Gehlen Catholic in a second-round game Friday.
BOYDEN-HULL/ROCK VALLEY 37, CARROLL KUEMPER 14: Cade Moser rushed for 116 yards and scored a touchdown as the No.1 Nighthawks upended the Knights in a Class 2A first-round playoff game in Hull, Iowa Friday.
J.T. Van't Hul and Elliot Van Kekerix also ran for two touchdowns for B-H/RV (9-1). Van't Hull rushed for 81 yards while Van Kekerix had 58. Kuemper ended its season with a 7-3 record.
The Nighthawks will face South Central (9-1) in a second-round game Friday.
PONCA 44, DONIPHAN-TRUNBALL 7: The No. 2 Indians got 204 yards rushing and three touchdowns from Dalton Tremayne as they rolled to a win over the Cardinals in a C2 first-round football playoff game in Ponca, Nebraska Friday.
Tremayne scored on a two-yard run in first quarter and a 59-yard run later in the half for the Indians (10-0). Tremayne also added a 33-yard rushing touchdown. Logan Kingsbury had a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs. Ponca will face Battle Creek on the road next Friday in a second-round game.
CENTRAL CITY 27, CEDAR CATHOLIC 26: The Trojans missed on a point-after conversion in the fourth quarter and Central City held on for a win in a C2 first-round playoff game played in Hartington, Nebraska, Friday.
Quarterback Dain Whitmire hooked up with Riley Adams for a 22-yard TD pass to pull Cedar Catholic within one point with 4:30 left in regulation but the PAT kick missed.
Jacob Keiser rushed for 161 yards and scored twice for Cedar Catholic, which ends its season with an 8-2 record. Central City moves on with a 7-3 mark.
EAST BUTLER 52, HARTINGTON-NEWCASTLE 20: No. 10 East Butler rolled to a 46-point halftime lead and went on to defeat Hartington-Newcastle 52-20 in a Class D1 football playoff game Thursday.
Quarterback Dalton Bohac scored three touchdowns and passed for three mite to lead the Tigers (7-2). Hartington-Newcastle (5-4) had trouble going into a stiff wind in the first quarter and fumbled twice to give East Butler short scoring drives.
Ethan Koch scored on a 16-yard run and Wildcat quarterback Shaye Morten broke a 53-yarder to the end zone to produce the final score with 1:16 left. Morten threw a 23-yard TD pass to Lincoln McPhillips for the Wildcats’ lone score in the first half.
WYNOT 50, WAUSA 20: Lucas Thingstad and Justin Lange combined for 339 rushing yards and seven touchdowns as the ninth-ranked (D-2) Wynot football team topped Wausa 50-20 in the opening round of the playoffs on Thursday in Wynot.
Thingstad finished with 23 carries for 198 yards and scored two touchdowns for Wynot (7-2). Lange ran for 141 yards and scored five touchdowns on 18 carries.
