HINTON, Iowa -- The fifth-ranked Western Christian football team came back from a 10-0 halftime deficit to defeat Hinton in a Class 1A District 1 game 19-16 played in Hinton, Iowa Friday.
Ben Granstra scored rushing touchdowns on back-to-back possessions in the third quarter to put Western Christian (4-1 overall, 3-0 District) ahead for the first time 13-10. He added a 27-yard scoring pass to Carter Kooi with 2:00 left in the frame to make the Wolfpack lead 19-10.
Hinton (3-2 overall, 2-1 District) was ahead 10-0 at the intermission thanks to a 26-yard field goal and a 58-yard TD run by Braden Vonk in the second quarter. Hinton also got a 15-yard run for a touchdown by Brennan Sitzmann in the fourth quarter to pull the Blackhawks within 19-16.
WOODBURY CENTRAL 26, LAWTON-BRONSON 6: Woodbury Central celebrated homecoming in style, registering a 26-6 victory over Lawton-Bronson in a battle for the Highway 20 traveling trophy.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead when senior quarterback Carter Schultzen zipped a 53-yard scoring aerial to classmate Brandon Stender midway through the first frame.
The hosts would add a pair of second-quarter scores. first on a 10-yard scamper by senior Anthony Baird, a run set up by a 75-yard jaunt by fullback Blake Erdmann, also a senior. WC closed out the first-half scoring when Schultzen and Stender connected again, this time from 29 yards out with 41 seconds left in the half, allowing Coach Curt Lilly's squad to head into halftime sporting a 20-0 cushion.
Lawton-Bronson came charging back in the third quarter, culminating a 69-yard drive with a 9-yard run by Haston Michaels, who tallied 93 yards in 12 carries in the contest.
Coach Jamey Lloyd's bunch could get no closer, however, as a 25-play 65-yard marathon drive stalled inside the WC 10-yard-line with 4:02 remaining in the contest.
Woodbury Central tacked on a late score, getting a 25-yard interception return into the end zone by senior Patrick Carney, his first of two picks on the evening.
Erdmann gained a career-high 144 yards on 14 totes, while Schultzen threw for 97 yards and the two TDs to Stender. Kurt Countryman, another Wildcat senior, joined teammate Nate Monahan in recovering fumbles for the victors, who moved to 2-3 on the season, 1-2 in Class A District 1 action.
Aaron Schorg topped the Eagles' defensive chart with nine tackles, while teammates Garrett Dekker and Jonah Kollbaum added seven stops. Lawton-Bronson fell to 0-5 on the season, 0-3 in District 1 competition.
SPIRIT LAKE 49, ALGONA 21: Nicholas Christensen passed for 232 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Indians to a win over the Bulldogs in a Class 3A District 1 game player in Spirit Lake, Iowa Friday.
Christensen also rushed for 96 yards and scored on a 60-yard run late in the third quarter to give Spirit Lake (4-1 overall, 2-1 District) a 42-21 lead. Alex Van Dyke was on the receiving end of two of the scoring passes for the Indians and had 86 yards on three catches.
Algona quarterback Matt Grien passed to Wyatt Wegener for a 13-yard touchdown and Jacob Durant scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs (3-2 overall, 1-2 District) a 14-13 lead at the half.
WEST LYON 45, ALTA/AURELIA 6: Jaden Snyder rushed for two touchdowns and threw two touchdown passes as top-ranked (1A) West Lyon posted a district victory over Alta/Aurelia on Friday night.
Snyder, who had 45 yards rushing on five carries, scored on runs of four and 28 yards. He tossed touchdown passes of 23 yards to Zach DeSmet and 23 yards to Micah Meyer.
Mitch Rentschler and Peyton Klarenbeek also tallied rushing touchdowns for the Wildcats.
STORM LAKE 47, HUMBOLDT 14: Brayden Hoops scored five touchdowns to help the Tornadoes to a convincing win over the Wildcats in a Class 3A District 1 game played in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Hoops scored four rushing touchdowns and also returned a fumble for a score as Storm Lake improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in District. Lamar Mulgae also scored a rushing touchdown for the Tornadoes.
SIOUX CENTRAL 18, SOUTH O'BRIEN 6: Jake Hanson passed for a touchdown and ran for another to lead the Rebels to a win in a Class A District 2 game played in Sioux Rapids, Iowa Friday evening.
Hanson scored on a 15-yard run in the second quarter and connected with Chase Jessen for a 12-yard TD to put Sioux Central (3-2 overall, 2-1 overall) ahead 18-0. Ben Hargens also ran for a 6-yard score for the Rebels.
Carson Louscher got the Wolverines (0-5 overall, 0-3 District) on the scoreboard on an 8-yard run in the third quarter.
WEST SIOUX 70, WEST MONONA 22: Hunter Dekkers passed for four touchdowns to lead the third-ranked Falcons to a win over the Spartans in a Class A District 1 game played in Onawa, Iowa Friday.
Dekkers connected with four different receivers for scores, hitting Trevor Schuler, Jake Lynott, Victor Hernandez and Kade Lynott once each for touchdown passes. Jake Lynott and Dekkers also scored on rushing TDs for West Sioux (5-0 overall, 3-0 District).
Calvin Coffman scored on a 78-yard kickoff return for the Spartans (3-2 overall, 1-2 District) while Keegan Holverson and Josh Heather scored on runs in the second half for West Monona.
UNITY CHRISTIAN 31, SIBLEY-OCHEYEDAN 0: Carter Schiebout rushed for 244 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Knights to a win in a Class 1A District 1 game played in Orange City, Iowa Friday.
Schiebout carried the ball 43 times and also scored on a two-point conversion run. Brandon Visser also connected with Josh Dragstra for an 8-yard TD pass in the second for the Knights (1-4 overall, 1-2 District).
BOYER VALLEY 42, GLIDDEN-RALSTON 12: Joe Weber had 316 yards of total offense and six touchdowns as the Boyer Valley football team downed Glidden-Ralston 42-12 on Friday in Dunlap.
Weber threw for 252 yards and four touchdowns covering 16, 19, 9 and 25 yards for Boyer Valley (4-1). Weber also ran for 64 more yards and scored on touchdown runs of 1 and 39 yards. Cody Berens caught eight passes for 85 yards and two touchdowns for Boyer Valley.
Boyer Valley led just 20-12 at halftime, but then scored 22 unanswered points in the third quarter.
Glidden-Ralston drops to 2-3.
Through five weeks, Weber now has over 1,000 yards passing and 20 touchdown passes.
REMSEN ST. MARY’S 51, NEWELL-FONDA 26: Canaan Cox accounted for 338 yards rushing and receiving and eight touchdowns as the second-ranked (Eight-Player) Remsen St. Mary’s football team defeated fourth-ranked Newell-Fonda 51-26 on Friday in Newell.
Cox had 29 carries for 228 yards and six touchdowns for St. Mary’s (5-0). Cox scored on runs of 59, 29, 26, 26, 4 and 2 yards. He also caught two passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns, scoring on receptions of 46 and 64 yards.
Newell-Fonda falls to 4-1.
SHELDON 47, CENTRAL LYON/GEORGE-LITTLE ROCK 7: Jaden Kleinhesselink passed for four touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Orabs to a win over the Lions in a Class 2A District 1 game played in Rock Rapids, Iowa Friday.
Kleinhesselink connected with Tyler Lode, Tyler Merley and Kyle Boerhave for scoring passes and also ran 25 yard for a TD for the Orabs (4-1 overall and 2-1 District).
Central Lyon/G-LR (1-4 overall and 1-2 District) scored its points on a 21-yard pass from Lucas Nagel to Brady Wright.
BH-RV 56, POCAHONTAS 0: J.T. Van’t Hul had 302 yards of total offense and two touchdowns as the second-ranked (2A) Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley football team defeated Pocahontas 56-0 on Friday in Hull.
Van’t Hul ran for 180 yards on just nine carries and scored on runs of 15 and 18 yards for BH-RV (4-1). Van’t Hul also completed 8 of 11 passes for 122 yards.
The Nighthawks ran for 400 yards on 38 carries and averaged 10.5 yards per carry.
Pocahontas falls to 0-5.
GEHLEN CATHOLIC 49, MVAO/COU 21: Cole Wiltgen completed four passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns as Gehlen Catholic remained unbeaten with a 49-21 Class A district 1 victory over MVAO/COU.
Wiltgen connected with Xavier Roberts for an 89-yard score and Izaac Herbst for a 20-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter for the 5-0 Jays.
Elijah Freking had three carries for 12 yards and all three went for touchdowns on runs of eight, two and two yards.
MVAO/COU quarterback Ely Fundermann passed for 123 yards and rushed for 182 yards in the setback. Fundermann rushed for a pair of touchdowns while throwing a 40-yard touchdown pass to Mark Morley.
LOGAN-MAGNOLIA 21, OA-BCIG 20: OA-BCIG quarterback Kaden Ladwig ran for an 11-yard touchdown in overtime, but was unable to connect on a two-point conversion pass and Logan-Magnolia held on for a Class 1A District 7 victory Friday night.
Ladwig scored two touchdowns for OA-BCIG (3-2). Teammate Chase Devitt topped the century mark in rushing for the 11th time of his career, carrying for a career-best 247 yards and a 9-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Isaac Endrulat had 10 solo tackles and five assists for the Falcons.
WALTHILL 57, HAMPTON 40: Walthill rallied from a 34-25 halftime deficit to outscore Hampton 26-6 in the third quarter en route to winning a Six-Player game Friday afternoon on its home turf.
Quarterback Romelo Porter scored on touchdown runs of nine and 10 yards in the third quarter for Walthill (3-1) and also fired a 55-yard touchdown pass to Kain Miller in the same frame. Also in the third, Tavian Brown scored the last of his two touchdowns, a 2-yard run.
Porter also scored on a 65-yard run. He later fired touchdown passes of 18 and 15 yards, respectively, to Kellen White Eyes and Miller.
Brown also rushed for a 40-yard touchdown in Walthill’s second straight win.
CEDAR CATHOLIC 21, BATTLE CREEK 6: Jacob Keiser ran for 177 yards and a 14-yard touchdown on 25 carries as the sixth-ranked (C-2) Cedar Catholic football team defeated fourth-ranked Battle Creek 21-6 on Friday in Hartington.
Jackson Eickhoff and Dain Whitmire both scored on a 1-yard run for Cedar Catholic (5-0).
Weston Johnson ran for 104 yards on 23 carries and scored on a 5-yard run for Battle Creek (3-2).
WYNOT 62, ALLEN 12: Lucas Thingstad ran for 112 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries as the Wynot football team defeated Allen 62-12 on Friday in Wynot.
Wynot improves to 2-2 while Allen falls to 3-1.
TEA AREA 34, VERMILLION 6: Quarterback Hunter West passed for 175 yards and three touchdowns to lead the No. 2 Titans (Class 11A) to a win over the Tanagers in a game played in Tea, S.D. Friday.
Carter Slykhuis also rushed for 117 yards and scored three touchdowns, hauling in two passes for scores while running for another to help Tea Area improve to 5-0.
Brett Culver scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter to give the Tanagers (1-4) an early 6-0 lead. Rylan Pratt gained 139 yards on 29 carries for Vermillion.
