MASON CITY, Iowa | Brett Despenas scored three goals while leading the Mason City Mohawks to a 7-3 Midwest High School Hockey League win over the Sioux City Metros Saturday afternoon at the North Iowa Ice Arena.
Despenas and teammate Ethan McHenry each scored two first-period goals as Mason City (5-3-0-0) jumped to a 5-0 lead. The closest the Metros came was 5-2 when Skyler Beller scored the first of his two second-period goals at the 8:16 mark.
Tanner Frerichs also added a second-period goal for Sioux City (4-6-0-1), which was outshot 37-32. Goaltender Ben Morehead (2-3-0-1) converted 30 of 37 save chances.
Sioux City’s junior varsity slipped to 2-6-3 following a 7-2 loss. Walter Werden and Brock Glissman scored goals for the JV Metros while goaltender Blake Beller converted 20 of 27 save chances.
The two same two teams will continue MHSHL action today. The JV game will start at 9 a.m. and the varsity will follow at 11 o’clock.
