SIOUX CITY | Varsity and junior varsity squads from the Sioux City Metros remained red hot following Midwest High School Hockey League victories over the Des Moines Oak Leafs at the IBP Ice Center Sunday afternoon.
Connor Sand scored two of the Metros’ four second-period goals as the varsity squad collected their fourth consecutive victory, 5-2. Goaltender Collin Patrick recorded his first shutout of the season as the JV Metros improved their season record to 6-4 following their fifth consecutive win, 1-0.
En route to improving its season record to 8-1-1, Sioux City climbed into third place in the MHSHL varsity standings with 17 points. The Metros still trail first-place Kansas City (12-0, 24 points) and second-place Omaha (10-1, 20 points) as both teams posted Sunday wins; Kansas City a 4-0 blanking of Cedar Rapids and Omaha by a 2-1 shootout over Waterloo.
Sioux City has leaped to fifth in the MHSHL JV standings with 12 points. Omaha (11-0) has a 22-21 JV lead over second-place Kansas City (10-1-1).
Sand, who has eight goals and six assists on the season, recorded his second multiple-goal game of the season. He has turned in seven goals and three assists while scoring in four of his last five games.
Drake Beller began a four-point (1 goal, 3 assists) performance with a first-period goal. Beller (8 goals, 14 assists) assisted on Sand’s second goal of the game and also assisted on second-period goals from Reece McDonald and James Page.
Page (8 goals, 8 assists) began his fourth multiple-point game of the season when he assisted on Beller’s first-period goal.
Winning goaltender Blake Beller (8-1-1) had 16 saves.
Taylor Frerichs scored a first-period power play goal for the JV Metros.
The Metros will host Kansas City on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s action features a 3 p.m. varsity start followed by a 5 p.m. JV game while the 10 a.m. varsity Sunday game precedes a noon JV start.
