CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa | Following the first two weeks of the season, there’s already an interesting race in the Midwest High School Hockey League.
Cedar Rapids is one of three teams tied for a fourth-place six points in the MHSHL’s overall standings. The Rough Riders created the deadlock with Sunday’s 3-1 win over the Sioux City Metros on its home sheet at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
Sioux City (3-1), a 5-0 winner over the Rough Riders on Saturday, shares the same win-loss record as Cedar Rapids and the Des Moines Oak Leafs. All three teams are chasing the MHSHL’s co-leaders, Omaha and Kansas City, which are each 4-0 with eight points while Waterloo (3-0-1) is in third place with seven points.
Chase Lewison posted his second two-goal game of the young season for the Metros on Saturday night. He scored both of his goals in the third period as Coach Dave LeGree’s squad, which got a first-period goal from James Page, scored four third-period goals.
Grant Newman and Tyler Ownby also scored in the third for the Metros. Connor Sand delivered three assists while Drake Beller added two assists.
Winning goalkeeper Blake Beller stopped each of the 22 shots he faced while posting his first shutout of the season.
Sioux City jumped out to a 1-0 lead Sunday on Drake Beller’s first-period goal, which was assisted by Kolton Kane. Cedar Rapids snapped the 1-all tie on the first of Cameron Walker’s two goals.
Blake Beller had 12 saves in the loss.
The Metros’ junior varsity squad also split its weekend games. Dayson Tucker had a shootout goal in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Cedar Rapids. Will Stokes had 33 saves.
Colby Neiman scored a third-period power play goal for the JV Metros in Sunday’s 2-1 loss. Chandler Pithan and Cale Bricker assisted on the goal for Sioux City (1-3) while Collin Patrick had 21 saves.
The Metros’ varsity and JV teams will each play Saturday and Sunday at Mason City.
