DES MOINES | Ryan Greenough and Cole Patava scored second-period goals Sunday as the Des Moines Oak Leafs handed the Sioux City Metros their first loss of the season, 3-0 during Midwest High School Hockey League action at Metro Ice Rink.
Winners by a 3-2 shootout on Saturday over the Oak Leafs, Coach Dave LeGree’s Metros are now 9-1 on the season. The Des Moines Capitals share the same record following their fifth consecutive win, 5-4 over Dubuque on Sunday.
Taylor Frerichs notched the lone shootout goal for Sioux City in Saturday afternoon’s victory. Blake Beller stopped all four shots he faced in the shootout and overall, finished with 23 saves.
Tanner Frerichs and Drake Beller scored goals in the first and second periods, respectively. The Oak Leafs sent the game into overtime on Seth Harpenau’s goal with 13:58 remaining in the third period.
Connor Close stopped all 20 shots he faced as he blanked the Metros Sunday. Blake Beller (5-1) had 17 saves.
Sioux City has allowed an MHSHL-best 18 goals.
Will Stokes had 23 saves Saturday for the Metros junior varsity in a 3-1 win over the Oak Leafs. Sioux City received goals from Walter Werden, T.J. Lake and Taylor Frerichs.
Carter Manthorne recorded a shutout Sunday, stopping all 27 shots he faced in a 3-0 win. Lake scored for the Metros (7-2-0-1) along with Christen Peterson and Nick Novak.
The Metros have only one game this week, Friday at the IBP Ice Center against Omaha. The varsity game will start at 6 p.m. and the JV game will follow at 8.
