SIOUX CITY | Connor Sand scored two power-play goals in the second period while leading the Sioux City Metros to a 4-1 Midwest High School Hockey League win over Omaha Thursday night at the IBP Ice Center.
It was only the fifth game of the season for Sand, who has three goals and one assist for Coach Dave LeGree’s Metros. Sand’s man-advantage goals were about 3 ½ minutes apart, both assisted by James Page.
Logan Visser also assisted on Sand’s first power play goal at the 12:02 mark of the second period. Tanner Frerichs assisted on the man-advantage goal that came with 4:38 remaining until the second intermission.
Page, who has 22 goals and 24 assists for the Metros (16-6-2) also assisted on Frerichs’ first-period goal. Page also tallied a goal with 7:32 left in the game.
Frerichs, second in the MHSHL with 58 points (24 goals, 34 assists), posted his 16th multiple-point game of the season, contributing a goal and two assists.
Winning goaltender Blake Beller (9-6-2) had 29 saves in the Metros’ second straight win.
Joshua Menzenberg dished two assists, but it wasn’t enough for the Metros junior varsity in a 5-2 loss.
Sioux City (10-12-2) trailed 5-0 before Dayton Tucker scored at the 3:32 mark of the third period. Christen Petersen added a goal while goaltenders Carter Manthorne and Will Stokes had 22 and 11 saves, respectively.
Sioux City will play at Lincoln Saturday night. The junior varsity game will start at 6 p.m. and the varsity will follow at 8.
