AMES, Iowa -- Cade Saeugling netted a penalty shot with 1:16 remaining Sunday as Waterloo edged Sioux City in the championship game of the Midwest High School Hockey League varsity state tournament at Ames/ISU Rink.
Saeugling's chance came about when Sioux City's Logan Visser was whistled for tripping on a late breakaway.
Dawson Sturch was stellar in goal for Waterloo, stopping 38 shots on goal by the Metros.
Warriors senior and leading scorer Kyle Schott broke a scoreless tie when he turned assists from Drew Westphal and Dylan Stech into the game's first goal 6:20 into the second period.
Sioux City drew even at 13:36 of the second on Reese McDonald's unassisted tally. Blake Beller made 27 stops in net for the Metros.
The championship is Waterloo's seventh overall and first since 2012.
Waterloo denied Sioux City its first state title since 2003.
