SIOUX CITY | Defenseman Grant Newman’s goal, 2 ½ minutes into overtime, lifted the Sioux City Metros to a 2-1 overtime win over the Des Moines Oak Leafs during Midwest High School Hockey League action Saturday at the IBP Ice Center.
Newman’s second goal of the season came off assists from Chase Lewison and Walter Werden. It was the second point of the game for both Newman and Lewison.
Lewison, who has scored in three of his last four games, had given Sioux City (7-1-1) a 1-0 lead with 4:09 left in the first period. Newman and Tyler Ownby assisted on the goal.
Des Moines (6-3-1) tied the game on Seth Harpenau’s goal with 7:04 left in the third period.
Winning goaltender Blake Beller (7-1-1) converted 22 of 23 save attempts.
Dayson Tucker’s goal with 6:43 left in the third period gave the Metros’ junior varsity a 3-2 victory.
Forty-seven seconds before Tucker’s game-winning goal, teammate Smith Archer tied the game 2-2 with a goal. The Metros (5-4) also received a first-period goal from Nicholas Bradshaw.
Winning goaltender Will Stokes (3-3) converted 32 of 34 save chances.
The Metros will host the Oak Leafs today as the weekend series concludes at the IBP Ice Center. The varsity game will start at 10 a.m. and the JV contest will follow at noon.
