MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa | Relays provided more points than individual events for Sioux City during Saturday’s state boys swimming meet held at the Marshalltown YMCA/YWCA.
Andrew Pham was the leadoff swimmer in a pair of Top-10 relays. Pham combined with Brenndan Gorski, William Rankin and Eli Mollet for a seventh-place 1:27.43 in the 200 freestyle relay.
Pham and Mollet were veterans from last year’s 200 freestyle relay that finished 12th.
Andrew Pham later teamed up with Albert Pham, Nathan Gobell and Quincy Markham to place ninth in the 200 medley (1:39.36). Coach Eric Hoak’s Spartans also received an 11th-place 3:16.97 from the 400 freestyle relay foursome of Rankin, Markham, Gorski and Mollet.
Andrew Pham was unable to improve upon last year’s ninth-place efforts when he took 14th in the 50 freestyle (21.66) and 18th in the 100 butterfly (53.01).
Rankin placed 14th in the 100 freestyle (48.32) while Gobell placed 20th in the butterfly (54.03).
Sioux City scored a 13th-place 60 points in the 26-team meet.
Waukee outscored Iowa City West 244-210 to win the state title.
