LE MARS, Iowa | No. 3 Le Mars Gehlen Catholic swept No. 15 Westwood 25-15, 25-12, 25-22 in a Class 1A Regional volleyball semifinal played in Le Mars, Iowa Thursday.
Katie Peters had 16 kills, including one on match point to help the Jays advance with a 26-6 record. Katelyn Langel also had 10 kills for Gehlen, which will be making their ninth regional final appearance in last 10 years. The Jays will take on unranked Harris-Lake Park in the regional final in George, Iowa Tuesday.
Westwood, regular-season champions of the Western Valley Conference got seven kills from Kaylee Smits. The Rebels (23-9) went on a 9-0 run in the third set to lead 17-11 before the Jays closed to match with a 14-5 surge.
HARRIS-LAKE PARK 3, KINGSLEY-PIERSON 0: The Harris-Lake Park volleyball team swept Kingsley-Pierson 25-15 in a Class 1A regional semifinal on Thursday in George.
In game one, Harris-Lake Park junior Taylor Meyer served the last four points of a back-and-forth game one to lead the Wolves to a 25-18 victory.
The Wolves opened a large lead in the second set leading 22-9 until Madison Wurth from the service line brought Kingsley-Pierson back to within 22-17 before Harris-Lake Park regained control to win the second contest.
Meyer finished with 17 kills and nine digs for Harris-Lake Park (21-11). Senior Blake Gunderson recorded 12 kills and seven digs. Junior Madison Brevik dished out 22 assists and added 14 digs.
Senior Bradi Harvey dished out 22 assists and added 15 digs for Kingsley-Pierson (25-15). Senior Addison Hirschman recorded 12 kills. Junior Madison Goodwin notched 11 digs and Wurth had three ace serves.
Kingsley-Pierson, which won the Western Valley Conference tournament, graduates seven seniors.
Harris-Lake Park plays third-ranked Gehlen Catholic in the regional championship at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at George-Little Rock high school to go to the state tournament.
WESTERN CHRISTIAN 3, BOYDEN-HULL 0: The second-ranked (2A) Western Christian volleyball team swept Boyden-Hull in a Class 2A regional semifinal on Thursday in Hull.
Jessi De Jager and Ashtyn Veerbeek both recorded 14 kills for Western Christian (36-6). Olivia Granstra dished out 22 assists and Madison Hofman notched 10 digs. Tori Wynja finished with nine assists and nine digs.
Boyden-Hull ends its season at 17-15.
Western Christian plays Central Lyon on Tuesday with the winner advancing to the state tournament. Western Christian has earned 17-straight trips to the state tournament.
CENTRAL LYON 3, WEST LYON 0: Elle Petersen had eight kills to pace the Lions to a straight set win over the Wildcats in a Class 2A regional volleyball final played in Inwood, Iowa Thursday. Game scores were 25-13, 25-19, 25-22.
Sutton Schlumbohm and Brecken Boekhout also added seven kills apiece for Central Lyon (24-8). Kiley Metzger had 26 assists and Schlumbohm 27 digs for the Lions, who will face No. 3 Western Christian in the regional final in Hull, Iowa Tuesday.
West Lyon (16-9) got eight kills apiece from Riley Lenz and Madysn Grotewold and seven from Rchael Joachim.
