DES MOINES | Sioux City got goals from four players including team leader Eeli Tolvanen as it defeated Des Moines 4-2 in a United States Hockey League game at Buccaneer Arena Friday.
Tolvanen got his 25th red-lighter of the year for the Musketeers, which is currently fifth in the USHL in goal scoring.
Kristian Pospisil got Sioux City into the lead with a score 9:11 into the game. The Musketeers have been lethal when scoring first, improving to 26-2-3 when they go up 1-0.
J.C. MacLean got his fourth of the year later in the period to make it 2-1 Musketeers are one period to counter a Collin Rutherford goal that got Des Moines on the board 11:53 in.
Charlie Kelleher got his 14th goal of the season at 2:22 of the second period, but the Sioux City lead was back at one when Eric Otto scored for Des Moines to make it 3-2.
Tolvanen's goal came with 4:47 left in the middle period and gave Sioux City a lead going into the second intermission, where it is now 24-0-1 on the season with that advantage. The Musketeers put the defensive clamps on the Bucs in the third period, allowing just two shots on goal. Des Moines had a 27-25 shots advantage for the game.
Goalkeeper Matiss Kivlenieks reached the 30-win mark with the victory, a league-high, stopping 23 shots.
With games against its closest two Western Conference pursuers this weekend, Sioux City is looking to put some distance between itself and the pack. Des Moines is now nine points behind the Musketeers in the Western Division race while Waterloo, Saturday's opponent, remains five points back in second.
The Blackhawks downed Dubuque 5-3 Friday in a match-up of the second-place team in each Division.
