SIOUX FALLS | The Sioux City Musketeers extended a pair of streaks with a 3-1 United States Hockey League win over the Sioux Falls Stampede at the Denny Sanford Premier Center here Thursday night.
The Musketeers (8-11-3) not only won their third consecutive game, but also beat Sioux Falls (12-8-6) for the third time this season.
Ryan Leibold got the winning goal with 10:07 left in the third period and the Musketeers added an empty-net goal in the final minute. Aaron Grounds got a wraparound shot on the pads and Leibold buried the rebound for the game-deciding goal, Leibold’s second goal of the season.
Samuel Salonen scored the empty-netter, his second goal of the season against Sioux Falls.
After a scoreless first period, Sioux Falls drew first blood when Matt Quercia scored at the 13:02 mark. Sioux City’s Micah Miller tied it at 1-1 with an assist from Sampo Ranta at 14:35 of the second period.
Miller, by the way, scored a shootout goal in the Musketeers’ first win over Sioux Falls, 2-1, on Oct. 14 at the Tyson Events Center.
The Musketeers held a 31-27 shots-on-goal advantage, firing 14 shots in the third period at Jaxson Stauber.
Matt Jurusik picked up the win in goal for Sioux City, turning back 26 of 27 shots.
There were only six penalties whistled in the entire contest. However, two came when Sioux City’s Martin Pospisil and Quercia were called for matching minors after a shoving match at 5:03 of the third period.
The Musketeers return home for a 7:05 contest Saturday night against Lincoln before Omaha pays a visit for the annual New Year’s Eve game Sunday night.
