FARGO, N.D. | Sampo Ranta scored off a 2-on-1 rush with 1:36 left in overtime to give Sioux City a 3-2 United States Hockey League win over Fargo in a season-opening game held at Scheels Arena Saturday evening.
Ranta's goal came off a nifty cross-ice pass from Matthew Fawcett and helped rescue the Musketeers, who lost a two-goal lead in the third period.
Sioux City got the first goal of its season at 10:46 of the second period when Hayden Rowan scored off an assist from Matthew Miller and Calle Ehrnberg.
Mathieu De St. Phalle got his first goal as a Musketeer while on the power play at 2:34 of the third period to make it 2-0 Sioux City. Ranta and Randy Hernandez also assisted the Wisconsin recruit on the goal.
Fargo cut the Musketeer lead to one goal with Cole Koepke off for hooking on Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup's red-lighter. It tied things up on Brian Hurley's goal with 13:08 left in regulation.
Sioux City returns to action Friday when it plays at Tri-City.
