CRANBERRY, Pa. | Samuel Salonen is the latest from a long line of Sioux City Musketeers who hail from Finland.

Salonen scored three goals Thursday night as the Musketeers improved their preseason mark to 3-2 following a 3-2 United States Hockey League preseason win over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at the USHL Fall Classic contested at Dick’s Sporting Goods Rink.

A 6-foot-3, 198-pound native of Vantaa, Finland, Salonen became the third Musketeer to post a multiple-goal game in the last two weeks, joining Micah Miller and Mathieu De St. Phalle, both doing so in separate wins over Sioux Falls.

Fifty-one seconds remained in the first period when Salonen tallied an unassisted goal to extend his scoring streak to two games. He then took a feed from Randy Hernandez and turned it into an unassisted power-play goal that increased the Musketeers’ lead to 2-0 at the 2:51 mark of the second period.

Liam Walsh recorded a goal and an assist for Cedar Rapids, assisting on Dalton Messina’s goal with 3:48 remaining until the second intermission. Two minutes later, Salonen scored on Miller’s assist.

Winning goaltender Matt Jurusik (2-2) picked up his second straight win, recording 31 saves.

The Musketeers will conclude the USHL Fall Classic with Friday night’s 7 o’clock game against Muskegon at Dick’s Sporting Goods Rink.
