SIOUX FALLS | Sioux Falls had things pretty much its way most of the night and breezed past Sioux City 7-2 in a United States Hockey League game played before a crowd of 7.014 at the Denny Sanford Premier Center Friday evening.
The Stampede, returning home after a five-game road swing, gave their fans much to cheer about. scoring three times in the first period to take a 3-0 lead. Nolan Walker and Reid Stefanson scored even-man goals and A.J. Villella converted Sioux Falls' only power-play opportunity of the game while Matyas Svoboda was off for the Musketeers boarding.
Micah Miller breathed some life into the Sioux City's hopes in the second period, scoring off a rebound of Parker Ford's shot at 6:29 of the middle period to cut the Sioux Falls lead to 3-1.
The Stampede answered, however, with Jack St. Ivany scoring at 12:41 to put the hosts up by three goals again.
Sioux City got its second goal of the night with 6:15 to play when Bauer Neudecker got his fourth of the year when he rebounded Cole Koepke's shot. Again, Sioux Falls had an answer just 64 seconds later on Colin Swoyer's third goal of the season. Artem Ivanyuzhenkov also scored a pair of goals in the final period to account for the final scoring.
The loss drops Sioux City two points behind Lincoln for sixth place and the final playoff slot in the Western Conference. Lincoln improved to 6-0-1 over its last seven games with a 4-2 win over Dubuque Friday.
The game was the only contest of the week for Sioux City (21-20-6) which will return home for a rematch with the Stampede at Tyson Events' Center Friday.
