SIOUX CITY | The Sioux City Metros continue to move up in the Midwest High School Hockey League standings.
Reece McDonald became the latest Metro with a two-goal game, helping Sioux City climb up the ladder to second place in the league following Sunday morning’s 3-2 win over the first-place Kansas City Jets at the IBP Ice Center.
Coach Dave LeGree’s Metros head into the Christmas break with a 10-1-1 record and six straight wins. Despite being swept, first-place Kansas City (12-2) still has a 24-21 points advantage over Sioux City, which jumped past two teams currently at a third-place 20 points, Omaha (10-3) and Cedar Rapids (10-4).
McDonald now has five goals and three assists following his first game of two goals. Chase Lewison, who scored two goals in Saturday’s 5-3 win over the Jets, assisted on both of McDonald’s first-period goals. Walter Werden also assisted on McDonald’s first goal, which came at the 3:19 mark.
Connor Sand added an unassisted goal in the third period for the Metros, who outshot the Jets 56-19.
Winning goaltender Blake Beller (10-1-1) had 17 saves for a squad that has allowed just 21 goals, which ties with Omaha tops in the MHSHL.
The Metro junior varsity slid to 6-5-1 after a 3-1 setback. Dayson Tucker scored a second-period goal for the Metros while goaltender Collin Patrick had 23 saves.
The Metros are idle until Saturday, Jan. 6 when they host Lincoln. The varsity game will start at 3 p.m., followed by the JV contest at 5 p.m.
