Several Siouxland events have been planned Sept. 12-18 in conjunction with Iowa Prairie Heritage Week.

-- Bill and Dotty Zales of rural Plymouth County will provide an outdoor opportunity for people to learn about prairie plants and how to plant or “reconstruct” a prairie at 1 p.m. on Sept. 14. Participants will then help collect seed. Refreshments will follow at 4 p.m.

-- The Woodbury County Conservation Foundation, will sponsor a prairie walk at Riverside Bluffs at 6 p.m., Sept. 16. Participants should drive all the way north and then east in Kirk Hansen Park and meet at the parking lot at the foot of the hill. The park is located off of West 19th. Street near Riverside Boulevard.

-- Prairie walks at Sioux City Prairie are planned at 6 p.m. (long walk) and 6:30 p.m. (short walk) on Sept. 26. The walks will begin near the west parking lot at Briar Cliff University. Sponsored by the Iowa Prairie Network, these walks precede a 7:30 p.m., program at the St. Francis Center, arranged by Dr. Brian Hazlett of the Center for Prairie Studies of Briar Cliff University. Michael Forsberg and Daniel O’Brien will give the program. Forsberg is a nature photographer from Nebraska who has recently published Great Plains: America’s Lingering Wild and Dan O’Brien is best known for his book, Buffalo for the Broken Heart: Restoring Life to a Black Hills Ranch.
