MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. | Briar Cliff went 1-1 on the day downing Waldorf 7-3 and dropping a 10-4 decision to Walsh University in college softball action Tuesday.
The Chargers spotted the Warriors a 3-0 lead through three innings before coming back for the win. Summer Williams had three hits and drove in a pair of runs for Briar Cliff (2-9). Abyygail Lint also drove in two in the win for BCU. Isabella Gonzalez pitched a four-hitter and struck out three to get the win over Waldorf.
Briar Cliff got a run in the top of the first inning against Walsh but saw the Cavaliers score nine runs over the next three innings to take command. Bailey Nichols had three hits while Nicole Romero, Rachele Heaton, Gonzalez and Bailee Meyer added two his apiece as the Chargers pounded out 16 hits but stranded a dozen runners in the loss.
After a day off Wednesday, Briar Cliff takes on Glenville State in a doubleheader Thursday.
NORTHWESTERN 8, OLIVET NAZARENE 7: The Raiders scored twice in the top of the seventh inning then held on in the bottom of the inning for a win over the Tigers in a softball game at the Tucson Invitational in Tucson, Arizona Tuesday.
Jensen Boger hit a game-tying single in the seventh inning for Northwestern (5-3) and Saige Pennel scored from second base when Stephanie Seymour reached on an error for what turned out to be the game-winning run. Pennel, Boger and Emma Schnell had two hits apiece for the Raiders, who also defeated Aquinas Michigan 12-7 and lost to No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan Tuesday.
ARIZONA STATE 8, SOUTH DAKOTA 0: Jade Gortarez hit a pair of home runs to lead the Sun Devils to a shut out win over the Coyotes in a college softball game played in Tempe, Arizona Tuesday evening.
South Dakota (5-15) was limited to four hits by two ASU pitchers in a game that was halted by run rule after five innings. Jamie Holcher had two hits to pace South Dakota at the plate.
