STERLING, Kan. -- Morningside College, ranked No. 15 in NAIA softball swept a doubleheader from Sterling 14-5 and 9-1 in Sterling, Kansas, Wednesday. Both games were five innings.

Mackenzie Lose and Abby Conner each homered for Morningside, which had nine hits and scored in every inning of the opener. Conner had a two-run homer in the first inning and Lose a three-run shot during a six-run fifth.

Mara Amsberry added two hits and drove in three, while Abby Taylor had two RBIs. Hallie Misiaszek picked up the pitching win, with relief help from Alex Nelson.

The Mustangs scored eight runs in the top of the first inning in the second game, stringing together six hits. Amsberry had a three-run double and Rachel Macias a two-run single, while Conner singled home a pair.

Tracey Edwards and Amsberry finished with two hits each. Alex Nelson gave up six hits and struck out nine while picking up her second pitching win of the season.

Morningside moved to 6-4 overall.

WAYNE STATE GOES 1-1: Junior Abbie Hix went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs while freshman Maddie Moser pitched a complete game with six strikeouts to lead the Wayne State in a 3-2 win over Stonehill (Mass.) Wednesday morning at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.

The Skyhawks had one more hit in the game than WSC 7-6.

Moser improved to 2-2 on the season with her second complete game win on the Florida trip. The freshman from Central City allowed two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

Lewis University of Illinois outlasted Wayne State 14-11 in nine innings in the second game.

The Flyers scored six runs in the first inning and two more in the second for an 8-0 lead early in the contest.

Wayne State got back into the contest with a six-run second inning, highlighted by Emily Chandler’s three-run homer. Rachel Shumaker also tripled in the inning.

Junior starter Riley Vanderveen (1-3) was tagged with the pitching loss, working 5.1 innings.

NORTHWESTERN 5, ROOSEVELT 0: Emma Schnell pitched a complete game shutout and helped her own cause with a home run as Northwestern blanked Roosevelt 5-0 in college softball action in Tucson, Arizona, Wednesday.

Schnell allowed six hits while striking out 13 and walking one and was 2-for-3 at the plate with a homer and single and two RBIs. Emily Bosch doubled in a run for the Red Raiders (7-3) while Amanda Everhart also had an RBI.

Northwestern won twice here Wednesday, also defeating William Penn 4-3.
