CRETE, Neb. | Morningside’s softball team scored in bunches at times during Monday afternoon’s 13-3, 10-6 Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep over Doane.
Three times during the course of the twin bill, Coach Jessica Jones-Sitzmann’s 10th-ranked Mustangs scored five or more runs three times in an inning. Doane committed two errors that led to offense as the GPAC leaders scored five runs.
Morningside, which also took advantage of two errors while scoring eight times in the sixth, was paced at the plate by Tracey Edwards’ 3-for-4 effort. Three of her teammates provided two runs and two hits, Abby Conner, McKenzie Anderson and Elin Landgren while Moriah Bohlmann was 2-for-4.
Winning pitcher Rachel Henks allowed four hits and struck out 10.
Morningside (31-8, 13-3 GPAC) rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 6-5 to score five runs in the sixth inning. Allie Martinez tied the game at 6-all with a leadoff solo home run, then Anderson scored on Mara Amsberry’s triple. Later in the frame, Rachel Koch hit a two-run home run.
Bohlmann’s 3-for-5 slate included a leadoff home run in the second inning. Conner was 3-for-5 with a double, Dorpinghaus doubled and singled while coming through with two hits each were Amsberry, Koch and Landgren.
Henks (26-6) threw seven innings of relief to get the pitching victory, allowing four runs and seven hits while striking out one.
DORDT 10-7, BRIAR CLIFF 10-4: Beginning with Michal Huizenga’s two-run single in the top of the third inning, Dordt scored 10 unanswered runs while rallying past Briar Cliff in the first game of Monday’s Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bishop Mueller Field.
Marissa VandenBerg hit a two-run double to highlight Dordt’s four-run fourth inning while Summer Jansen’s two hits included a two-run single in the sixth. Corrine Valdix and Rachel Evavold each provided two hits and one RBI while winning pitcher Tianna Top scattered six hits and struck out one.
Danielle Ishii scored on Ashley Del Alto’s single to give Briar Cliff a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Teammate Gemma Perez had two hits.
Dordt (18-17, 11-7 GPAC) took advantage of four Briar Cliff errors while winning the second game, two of those coming in the second inning which led to four runs. Jansen was 3-for-3 with a solo home run in the third inning, an RBI double in the second inning and a leadoff double in the third. Carley DeRoin hit an RBI double in the second inning.
Briar Cliff (8-29, 2-16 GPAC) trailed 5-1 before scoring three runs in the fifth, a frame that included back-to-back RBI hits with Summer Williams’ double and Del Alto’s single. Mikayla Rodriguez was 2-for-2.
NORTHWESTERN 9, MOUNT MARTY 0: Kayla Tindall pitched a four-hitter and struck out four Thursday night as Northwestern won the first game of a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Northwestern Softball Complex.
Two Red Raiders each hit their fifth home runs of the season. Jessica Rayela’s two-run shot highlighted a three-run first inning while teammate Cheyenne Wilcke homered to lead off the third. Jessica Sandbulte hit a two-run double in the fourth inning.
Details were not available on Northwestern’s 15-12 win in the second game of the twin bill.
