Solsma earns GPAC offense award
SIOUX CITY | Morningside quarterback Trent Solsma is this week’s GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Offensive Player of the Week.
Solsma, a junior from Dakota Dunes, threw for 282 yards and four touchdowns in the Mustangs' win at Concordia to raise his season's total to 42 touchdown passes. Solsma has thrown at least two touchdown passes in each of the Mustangs' 11 games and has thrown four or more TD passes in seven of them. Solsma is the NAIA national leader in pass efficiency with a rating of 193.3 and is sixth in the nation in total offense (319.5 ypg) and seventh in passing (310.0 ypg).
Spann's three interceptions earn recognition
SIOUX CITY |Morningside defensive back Xavier Spann is this week’s GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Defensive Player of the Week. Spann, a junior, from Lakeland, Florida, tied the Morningside single-game record with three pass interceptions in the Mustangs' 35-0 shutout win against Concordia. Spann tied a record that had been accomplished nine times before.
Spann is the Mustangs' season co-leader with four interceptions.
Wyant earns special teams honors
SIOUX CITY | Spencer Wyant of Morningside is this week’s GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Special Teams Player of the Week. Wyant, a junior, from Sergeant Bluff, averaged 41.8 yards per punt with a long punt of 58 yards. Three of his punts were downed inside the 20. He also ran 30 yards on a fake punt.
Outlaws close out season with win
SIOUX CITY | The Sioux City Outlaws moved to 6-1 with a 151-111 win over the Sioux Nation out of Santee, Nebraska. Weston Wood lead the Outlaws with 34 points.
The Outlaws got double-digit scoring from Alvin Gunter with 30, Coco Cofield had 28, Nate Deal added 19 and Marcus Watkins and Martez Van Buren with 12 a piece.
The Sioux Nation was lead by Derrick Marks 25 and Casey Saul added 20.
The Outlaws led 81-51 at halftime.
The outlaws will begin a new season in a new league in August 2018.
Garza earns freshman of week honors
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa forward Luka Garza was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Garza (6-foot-11, 235 pounds) led Iowa to a pair of victories last week over Chicago State (95-62) and Alabama State (92-58). The native of Washington, D.C., averaged a team-best 13.5 points, nine rebounds, and 2.5 blocked shots. He made 57.1 percent (8 of 14) of his field goal attempts.
Against Chicago State, Garza totaled a team-best 16 points, three blocks, and five rebounds. Garza became just the second Hawkeye in the last 20 years to register 16 points and five rebounds in their debut (Aaron White in 2011).
