Oberfoell earns all-region honor
SIOUX CITY | Morningside College’s Nikki Oberfoell, a 5-foot-6 senior libero from Brighton, Colo., received honorable mention NAIA All-West Central Region honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Oberfoell leads the Mustangs with 534 digs for an average of 4.90 digs per set and is second on the team with 19 ace serves. Her 534 digs is the eighth highest single-season total in Morningside history and her
4.90 digs per set is the fifth highest average in the Mustangs’ record book.
Oberfoell has produced a double figure dig performance in 27 of the Mustangs’ 30 matches, including a season’s high 31 digs in a 3-2 triumph against city rival Briar Cliff University on Sept. 19.
Wadley named co-player of the week
IOWA CITY -- University of Iowa senior running back Akrum Wadley was named Big Ten Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his play in Iowa’s 56-14 win at Nebraska. Wadley was also named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
Wadley (5-foot-11, 195-pounds), a native of Newark, New Jersey, rushed 19 times for a season-high 159 yards at Nebraska, scoring three touchdowns on runs of 20, one, and 29 yards. He also had one reception for eight yards to total 167 all-purpose yards. Wadley surpassed 100 rushing yards in a game for the 14th time in his career.
Gustafson ears third straight honor
IOWA CITY -- University of Iowa junior Megan Gustafson has been named to the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Honor Roll. It is the ninth weekly honor of Gustafson’s career and her third in as many weeks.
Gustafson averaged 20.3 points, 12.7 rebounds, 2.0 blocks, and shot 67.4 percent from the field to lead Iowa to three wins in four days at the Puerto Rico Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, last week. Gustafson netted 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and pulled down 10 boards in 19 minutes in Iowa’s win over Morgan State on Nov. 22.
On Nov. 23, Gustafson scored a game-high 23 points and recorded 14 rebounds (11 defensive) to lead Iowa past Charlotte. Two days later, Gustafson netted 20 points and pulled down 14 rebounds (9 offensive) in Iowa’s win over Elon.
ISU's Schaben recognized for play
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State outside hitter Jess Schaben was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week. The award is Schaben's second of the season, her first career Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week win and her seventh career Big 12 weekly honor.
Schaben is the fourth different Cyclone to win Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week this season, joining four-time winner Hali Hillegas and one-timers Alexis Conaway and Grace Lazard.
The junior from Defiance, Iowa was quiet in attack in ISU’s regular season finale against Texas Tech, recording eight kills in the sweep of the Red Raiders. However, she had a career day in defense as she recorded a career-high 23 digs in the win.
