CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa | Claire Gerdes paced a balanced attack with 10 kills while leading top-seeded Cedar Falls to a 25-21, 25-19, 25-16 sweep over West Des Moines Valley in Friday morning’s Class 5A state volleyball tournament title match at the U.S. Cellular Center.
Gerdes will continue her volleyball career at the University of South Dakota. Akacia Brown provided nine kills while Wichita State commit Grace Burken added eight kills and two blocks for Cedar Falls (43-2), which swept each of its three state matches this week and has dropped only seven sets this season.
Elite all-state setter Tayah Mahi, a UNI commit, provided 24 assists, nine digs and an ace serve for a Cedar Falls squad that a year ago, was the 5A state runner-up to Ankeny Centennial.
Valley (41-8), the No. 2 seed, was coming off Thursday’s semifinal sweep of Cetennial, which had won the previous three 5A titles. Nebraska commit Madi Kubik had 13 kills, six digs and one ace serve for the Tigers.
