Teddy bear has extra fluff

GALESBURG, Ill. | That's some strange-looking stuffing.

A Cherokee, Iowa, man was arrested in Galesburg, Illinois, Jan. 13 for allegedly trafficking 5 pounds of cannabis inside of a four-foot-tall teddy bear.

Hunter L. Parker, 21, was arrested at the Amtrak Station in Galesburg and charged with escape, two counts of resisting arrest, cannabis trafficking 2,000-5,000 grams and manufacture/delivery of cannabis 2,000-5,000 grams.

According to a statement from the Knox County Sheriff's Department, deputies were conducting a security check at the Amtrak Station Saturday when they discovered Parker had purchased a one-way ticket to St. Louis.

After speaking with Parker, deputies were granted permission to search his bags. That's when the statement said deputies found a four-foot-tall teddy bear, which had a "strong odor" of suspected cannabis and a hard substance in its legs.

Parker fled on foot when he was placed under arrest, according to the statement. After a brief foot chase, he was apprehended and taken to the Knox County Jail.

The statement said deputies retrieved five packages of suspected cannabis weighing 5.6 pounds and 92 grams of hash, which has an estimated street value of $25,000.

Don't check my pockets

SIOUX CITY | If you don't have a teddy bear handy, there's always your front pants pocket.

A Sioux City man who had an active warrant out for his arrest led police on a high-speed chase and, after he was apprehended, was found to have meth and marijuana in his front pocket.

Freddy Bernal, 31, was arrested and charged with a handful of eluding and drug-related charges, as well as violation of his parole.

Court documents say after officers located Bernal and determined he had warrants out for his arrest, Bernal led officers on a pursuit starting at 14th Street and Grandview Boulevard. The pursuit at one point reached speeds of about 60 mph in a 25 mph zone and ended in the 200 block of West Fifth Street.

Bernal was found to be in possession of 2.3 grams of methamphetamine and 1.7 grams of marijuana in his front pants pocket, documents said.

Bernal was booked into the Woodbury County Jail on a $30,000 bond.
