The crime (not) heard 'round the world

SIOUX CITY -- A $6,500 set of hearing aids were among the possessions stolen from a Sioux City woman when a man made off with her purse near the Mercy Medical Center gift shop.

Randy Richard Williams, 43, of Sioux City, was eventually caught by police and charged with second-degree theft.

Court documents say on April 10, the woman was outside the gift shop of the hospital at 801 Fifth St., then set her purse down and walked away to see if someone was coming down the hallway.

As it was sitting on a table, police say Williams stole it and left the area. Inside the purse were the hearing aids, credit cards, key fobs and other miscellaneous items.

Police say a short time later, Williams went to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and the Howard Johnson Hotel to use the stolen credit card at an ATM.

Williams was booked into the Woodbury County Jail on April 28. During an interview with authorities, police said he admitted to stealing the purse and using the card at those locations. He said he then threw all of the items away in the Sioux City skywalk system.

Somebody's grounded

SIOUX CITY -- A 12-year-old boy was taken into custody Thursday night after Sioux City Police say he led them on a chase in a stolen Bobcat skid loader.

The incident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday, as the boy drove the skid loader through the area of Correctionville Road and Green Avenue.

Police said in a Facebook post that a police cruiser was damaged when the boy ran the skid loader into it. He was taken into custody after the skid loader became stuck.

No injuries were reported.
