1. King of kings
There’s only one King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Although the rock star has been gone for nearly 41 years, you could swear the spirit of Elvis Presley is alive and well if you’ve ever took part in Elvis Weekend. This Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest is the official search organized by Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc. and Graceland. Winners of all the preliminary contests will go on to compete in the semi-finals in Memphis. Round one begins at noon Saturday (Jan. 27) followed by a second and a final round at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Sioux City.
2. Over the rainbow
Editor's note: We incorrectly stated "The Wizard of Oz" show was at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Sioux City, when it is in fact at the Orpheum Theatre.
The magical world of Oz comes to life on the Orpheum Theatre stage. Audiences young and old should be more than familiar with “The Wizard of Oz,” a fantastical story about of Kansas country girl lost in a mysterious land, looking for the way home. Be dazzled by the colorful sets, timeless score and breathtaking special effects. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Jan. 26) at the Orpheum Theatre.
3. Cool as ice
Remember that terrible Vanilla Ice movie? Good grief, don’t get nostalgic on us. Instead of trying to re-watch a truly awful movie, go see a couple hockey games this weekend. The Sioux City Musketeers are ready to head out on the ice and let loose. Watch the Muskies take on the Fargo Force at 7:05 p.m. Friday (Jan.26) or the Sioux Falls Stampede at 7:05 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 27) at the Tyson Events Center. Goooo Muskies!
Sure most of the snow has melted away, but that’s not stopped our cravings for hot and hearty soup. The folks over at Marty’s Tap have a thing for soup, as well. In fact, the bar has gone so far as to set up a soup contest. The Marty’s Soup-off begins at 1 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 27) at Marty’s Tap. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top two soup makers. Contest entry fee is $20, half of which will be donated to the Sioux City Soup Kitchen.
5. Hey! That’s our bird!
Feel like taking an hour drive to Crofton, Nebraska, this weekend? Heck, we’ve been cooped up indoors for too long, so it’s probably time for a brief “vacation.” If you find yourself close to the Lewis and Clark Lake Visitor’s Center, check out Bald Eagle Days. This free event allows guests to view our nation’s bird perching in nearby trees and take part in various activities. Check it out at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Friday (Jan. 26) or 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 27 & 28).
