SIOUX CITY | Scores of shoppers showed up Thursday to get their first look at the new Marshalls store in Sioux City.
The big turnout and atmosphere for the retailer's grand opening was reminiscent of Black Friday, with shoppers arriving early for special sales and a chance to win special gift card prizes and other giveaways.
As a disc jockey spun tunes, shoppers crowded the sales floor and the checkout aisles.
The 22,027-square-foot store is the first of three national retailers to set up shop at Sunnybrook Village, a new commercial center in the larger Sunnybrook Plaza. During Marshalls grand opening, vehicles filled the complex's parking lot, as the parking spilled over into the Greatland Target lot next door.
Marshalls soon will be joined by a Bed Bath & Beyond and an Ulta Beauty.
All three chains are entering the Sioux City market for the first time.
Marshalls sells clothing, shoes, accessories and home décor at prices 20 to 60 percent below the regular prices that department and specialty stores would charge on similar items.
The company's tag line is "Never pay full price for fabulous."
The second largest off-price family apparel and home fashion retailer, behind its sister company, T.J. Maxx, Marshalls has more than 750 stores in 42 states.
T.J. Maxx closed its Sioux City location at Mayfair Mall in January 2008, ending 12 years of business here.
The $8 million Sunnybrook Village also includes a smaller building that will house a relocated Verizon Wireless store, and a yet-to-be announced restaurant.
