SIOUX CITY | The Fashion Bug at Gordon Plaza is in the process of liquidating its inventory and closing its doors.

The new owner of the discount women's clothing chain announced last year it would shut down 568 Fashion Bug stores in 39 states. Several hundred stores were to close by early 2013.

A woman who answered the phone at the Gordon Plaza Fashion Bug said she was not authorized to say how much longer the store will stay open. The shop anchors a retail center next to Hy-Vee.

Fashion Bug's owner, Charming Shoppes, was acquired last summer by Ascena Retail Group, which owns the Dress Barn, Maurices and Justice brands.

The first Fashion Bug store opened in the 1960's in Audubon, N.J. The company grew with rapid expansion in the late 1970's, and reached a peak of more than 1,400 stores in the 1990's, according to the company's website.
