Utility flags

Flags mark gas (yellow), electric (red) and telephone (orange) utilities in a construction zone in Sioux City. The white box also designates proposed construction.

You see them scattered around town. Sometimes alone, in clusters, or with corresponding paint marks on the ground. But what do those utility flags really mean? According to the American Public Works Association uniform color code guidelines, the following colors signify the types of utilities:

Red = Electric

Yellow = Gas/Oil/Steam

Orange = Telephone/Cable TV

Blue = Water

Green = Sewer

Purple = Reclaimed water

Pink = Temporary survey markings

White = Proposed construction
