Lopez left the medal behind and only Tuesday received another during a presentation by Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst.

Sen. Joni Ernst presented Tony Lopez Sr., of South Sioux City, with a Purple Heart he earned 50 years ago this July. Lopez left the medal in a hospital in Tokyo, Japan, where he was treated for a month after suffering injuries to his head, neck and left arm in a mortar attack on his campsite in the jungles of Vietnam on July 29, 1968.
