SIOUX CITY – Sioux City Bishop Heelan headed into tournament play on a positive note with a 51-47 Missouri River Conference boys basketball win over Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln here Thursday night.

The Crusaders finished the regular season with an 11-9 mark and tied Abraham Lincoln for second in the MRAC with an 8-4 record. Heelan opens Class 3A district play Monday against Spencer in Le Mars.

Elijah Hazekamp scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and the Crusaders overcame the loss of starter Bryce Reynolds to an ankle injury early in the game. Colin Kasperbauer added 13 points and six rebounds and Jackson Boever 12 points.

Heelan trailed by seven points with three minutes remaining but rallied and tied it on a Hazekamp bucket with a minute remaining. The Crusaders then came up with a steal and Hazekamp connected for the go-ahead bucket, then iced the win with two free throws with five seconds remaining.

Troy Houghton paced Abraham Lincoln with 18 points.
