CARROLL, Iowa | Class 3A fifth-ranked Sergeant Bluff-Luton jumped to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first inning en route to an 8-3 win over Coon Rapids-Bayard Sunday afternoon in the title game of the Carroll Tournament.
Brady Click’s RBI triple was among the first-inning highlights for Coach Matt Nelson’s Warriors. Dylan Moore had the first of his three hits in the opening inning, an RBI single.
Moore’s 3-for-4 slate also included a double and a two-run triple in the sixth inning. Ryley McGregor was 2-for-2 with an RBI triple in the second inning, an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth and a double. Colby Klingensmith hit an RBI single in the sixth.
Winning pitcher T.J. Heineman (3-1) allowed an earned run and four hits while striking out six in four innings. Click yielded a single and struck out three in three innings for Sergeant Bluff-Luton (14-4), which will host Hinton Tuesday.
HEELAN 1-2 AT DOWLING: Bishop Heelan’s baseball team faced perhaps their best competition of the season during the weekend, posting a 1-2 mark against state-ranked opponents at the Dowling Classic.
Dubuque Wahlert, the No. 4-ranked team in Class 3A, posted a 5-1 victory over the Crusaders on Saturday. Colin Kasperbauer was 2-for-3 with a double to lead Heelan’s offense. Matt Kerian had a fielder’s choice RBI in the second inning while Mason Heaton suffered the pitching loss.
Matt Nelson was 3-for-4 and scored on Brenden Roder’s RBI single in the top of the eighth inning as the Crusaders edged No. 2 (Class 4A) Dowling Catholic on Saturday. Kerian was 2-for-4 and also claimed the pitching win, allowing nine hits and two walks while striking out one in seven innings. Kasperbauer claimed the save, striking out one while throwing in the bottom of the eighth.
Second-ranked (Class 3A) Davenport Assumption rallied from a 9-5 deficit to score seven in the sixth inning and defeated Heelan 12-9 on Sunday. Kasperbauer and Elijah Hazekamp were each 2-for-4 while Hunter Hope had the squad’s biggest hit in a 7-run second inning, a two-run single.
Heelan (10-7) will host East on Tuesday.
LE MARS 2, REMSEN ST. MARY'S 1: Trent Hilbrands got the pitching win and drove in a run to help the Bulldogs down the Hawks in a non-conference baseball game in Remsen, Iowa Saturday evening.
Hilbrands pitched the first 6 1/3 innings and gave up five hits while fanning four. Keaton Candor came on in relief in the seventh and loaded the bases before fanning the last two batters of the game to get the save.
R.J. Staab, Brett Galles and Jacob Loutsch had hits in the seventh inning for the Hawks and Blaine Harpenau drove in the St. Mary's run with a ground out.
BETTENDORF 22, NORTH 4: The Bulldogs scored 14 runs in the first inning and rolled to a win over the Stars in a baseball game in Waterloo, Iowa Saturday.
Kam Arons had a home run and drove in seven runs to lead Bettendorf. Aaron Eybers had two hits and drove in a run with a double for North while Noah Weeter and Alex Tillo also plated runs for the Stars.
NORTH 15, MFL MAR-MAC 0: Quinton Krusemark pitched a one-hitter and struck out two to lead the Stars to a baseball in in Waterloo, Iowa Saturday. The game was halted by run rule after four innings.
Aaron Eybers was a home run shy of the cycle and drove in two for North while Noah Weeter had a two-run triple. Evan Helvig plated three runs while Alex Tillo, Hunter Krommenhoek and Tyrell Blakey also drove in two for North (8-7).
