Laurie Taylor, Master Gardener

Kid Scoop Friends, we continue to be surprised in this issue!  We’ve just found out that our own School Garden coordinator and master gardener supreme has been interviewed for the National syndicated Kid Scoop News and will be featured in the April issue, just in time for Earth Day. Michele Virula, Cash Steele, and Lauren Holzerland from the Spalding Elementary School in Sioux City interviewed Laurie Taylor  for the publication.  Laurie has been assisting with several school and community gardens in the region.  At Spalding they call her “The Gardening Lady”, “Miss Laurie,” and even “our teacher.”

Kid Scoop News celebrates school and community gardens and how they bring people together to help solve the issue of hunger.  Students learn about the process of growing and harvesting specific plants and they carry that information to others in the community.

On the day of the interview, Laurie brought in a very special component of the project, red wigglers...they become an incredible little natural compost machine that is used to break down some of the left over foods from school lunch.  These little wigglers create compost out of the scraps of food thrown away and in turn create a very rich and wonderful fertilizer .  Talk about having a fabulous recycling program!  We thought we would share a few of Laurie’s photos in this issue and hope you will read about this program in the April issue of Kid Scoop News.
