Grandma's Date Cookies

1 1/2 cup sugar

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup butter or shortening

1 teaspoon vanilla

3 eggs 

4 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 cup dates

1/2 cup water

Cook dates, water and 1/2 cup sugar together until thick. Cool until warm and spread on dough, which has been rolled to a 1/2 inch thick. Roll up like a jelly roll and leave refrigerated overnight. Slice with sharp knife and bake in greased pan at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.
