Sioux City police said Monday the shooting deaths of a man and a woman Sunday appear to be a homicide and suicide.

Autopsy results show that Michelle R. Streeter, 33, died of a single gunshot wound to the head, and that Vaughn I. Brewer, 36, died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Police found the two dead in their home at 1023 River Drive after receiving a call from a person who had entered the house and found Brewer shot.

Additional forensic testing is being done at the State Crime Laboratory in Des Moines and investigators are awaiting toxicology reports, which are expected in a few days, said Capt. Pete Groetken, bureau commander for investigative services.

Groetken said the investigation showed the two had argued prior to the shootings. He said there is "a small history" of domestic disturbances between Streeter and Brewer. Over the past two years police received five calls regarding the couple. None of the calls involved physical violence or physical abuse, he said.

Streeter and Brewer lived together at the River Drive home and, between them, had three children. Groetken said a 14-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl were Streeter's children, and that Brewer had a son younger than 11. He did not know the boy's exact age, however.

None of the children were home at the time of the shootings and all three were immediately cared for by family members. Groetken said in each case the children's other parent is able to care for them. The father of the two older children lives in Sioux City, he said. The younger boy's mother is on her way from somewhere in the South.
