Fire heavily damages Spirit Lake apartment building

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa | A fire caused heavy damage to a large apartment building Sunday in Spirit Lake.

Area fire departments responded shortly after noon to 1514 Hill Ave., according to a Dickinson County emergency dispatcher.

The fire caused portions of the building to collapse.

A total 32 apartments were affected by the fire, according to the American Red Cross, which responded to the scene and set up an emergency shelter for those affected.

Firefighters were still on scene as of 9 p.m. Sunday. It is unknown whether anyone was injured during the fire.

The Red Cross emergency shelter was established at the Spirit Life Fellowship Church at 2504 Enterprise Avenue. Red Cross caseworkers were available at Spirit Life Fellowship Church to work with those displaced to determine what they may need for their recovery.
