SIOUX CITY | Republican Doug Batcheller and Democrat Pat Gill are the candidates for the Woodbury County auditor/recorder position. Gill is the incumbent in the position, which oversees the county election office and handles financial functions.

Party: Republican

Age: 64

Residence: Sioux City

Occupation: Retired businessman

Electoral Experience: Elected to Sioux City school board four times beginning in 2000, won Republican auditor primary in June.

Two main issues for 2012:

1. Implementation of an identification requirement for voting, so only qualified citizens can vote. Would work with Iowa legislators to enact a voter ID law, since many county residents tell me they want that safeguard.

2. Work with all county department heads to see if there is any duplication of services that could be pared back to make more efficient use of taxpayer money. Not sure if the auditor office has services that could be changed, but a hard look must be taken.

Why vote for me:  In 12 years on the school board, always listened to people when they wanted to talk about issues, and delivering solid customer service is the prime duty of governmental departments.

"I seek to work with transparency. We should be accessible."

Party: Democrat

Age: 57

Residence: Sioux City

Occupation: Woodbury County Auditor

Electoral Experience: Elected to the Iowa House in 1990 and 1992; elected as county auditor in 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008.

Two main issues for 2012:

1. Election administration: I have successfully administered 75 elections since becoming county auditor. My most important duty is to conduct elections in a fair and impartial manner that earns full faith and confidence of county residents.

2. Budget management: Over the last 10 fiscal years, I have kept the average rate of growth of the combined total to less than one half of 1 percent. My combined budget totals have never exceeded the levels that have been approved by the County Board.

Why vote for me: "I have a proven record of progressive leadership and fiscal responsibility. I have and always will perform my duties in a fair and impartial manner that I hope earns your respect and continued support."
