3 Siouxland natives named to military academies

WASHINGTON, D.C. | Several Siouxland natives have been appointed to U.S. military academies by U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa.

Nominated to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., were Trey Achterhoff, of Orange City, Iowa, a senior at MOC Floyd Valley High School, and Taylor Pluim, of Sioux City, a senior at East High School.

Matthew Veach, of Hinton, Iowa, who attends Greystone Preparatory School at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas, was nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Each senator can appoint up to 10 residents for academies. Academy staff picks who to offer an appointment.
