MILFORD, Iowa | The body of an adult male was discovered in a multi-stall storage unit as crews extinguished a fire inside the structure in Milford Tuesday night.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m., according to a news release from the Milford Community Fire Department.
Fire crews were called to the area of 26th Street and Q Avenue for a reported storage unit fire, where they located one unit heavily involved, with flames spreading to a second unit, the release said. Firefighters forced entry into several of the units and discovered that smoke had spread throughout the unit.
As the fire was being extinguished, crews discovered the body of a single adult male, the release said. The body was transported to the Iowa State Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy.
Firefighters were on scene until approximately 1 a.m. Wednesday investigating and securing the scene. Assisting were the Arnolds Park Fire Department, Dickinson County Emergency Management, Dickinson County Sheriff's Office, Milford and Arnolds Park police departments, Milford Utilities and the Iowa State Fire Marshal.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
