CASTANA, Iowa -- The death of a woman in rural Castana is under investigation by the Monona County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a press release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety, on Tuesday the Monona County Sheriff's Office received a request for a welfare check on 66-year-old Cheryl Stowe of rural Castana.

Upon conducting the welfare check, deputies found Stowe's grandson Eliot Stowe, who was arrested on a warrant in an unrelated matter. They did not find Cheryl Stowe.

On Wednesday, Monona County deputies and the Iowa DNR found a dead body not far from Stowe's residence. The body will be transported to the Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

The Monona County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the Monona County Attorney’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa DNR, Mapleton PD and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
