Brown's Lake near-drowning

Two juveniles were pulled from Brown's Lake Sunday afternoon by onlookers. They were taken to UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's as a precautionary measure.

SALIX, Iowa -- Several local emergency responders were called to Bigelow Park Sunday afternoon for two juveniles who were reportedly drowning in Browns Lake.

Before 1:39 p.m. Sunday, two juveniles reportedly were swimming near the buoys at Brown's Lake. Woodbury County Deputy Sheriff Eric Smith said later Sunday that they began to have difficulty swimming at that point.

"They kind of tired out once they got out there," he said.

One of the juveniles was reportedly underwater for a minute during the incident. Both were brought to shore by people at the scene prior to the arrival of first responders, and taken by ambulance to UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's in Sioux City as a precautionary measure.

The Woodbury County Sheriff's Office, Woodbury County Conservation officers, Salix Fire Rescue and Salix ambulance responded to the incident.

Note: Earlier versions of this story misstated the day of the incident and the number of juveniles taken to the hospital.
