IRETON, Iowa | A cyclist hit by a van near Ireton, Iowa, was hospitalized in fair condition Monday morning.

Sean Bulthuis, 42, of Chula Vista, Calif., was hit from behind by a van while riding a bicycle north on Eagle Avenue about 4:30 p.m. Friday, according to a Sioux County Sheriff's Office statement.

The crash was about two miles south of Ireton.

Ireton Ambulance took Bulthuis to Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. He was then flown by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center-Sioux City. Bulthuis was listed in fair condition Monday morning, a spokeswoman said.

The driver of the van, Michael Mulder, 41, of Ireton, was cited for steering or riding too close to a cyclist, a misdemeanor.

Bulthuis had planned to participate in RAGBRAI, a sheriff's official said.

The annual bicycle ride across Iowa started in Rock Valley, Iowa, on Sunday.

Deputies say the crash is still under investigation.
