ROCK VALLEY, Iowa | A Rock Valley man has been arrested on a first-degree murder charge, after police said Santos Rodriguez Jr. killed his grandfather and burned the home where the two men lived.

Luis Leuvanos, 84, was discovered dead in the home in the 1400 block of 15th Street in Rock Valley after emergency officials responded to a fire on Oct. 29. The home was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived at 2 a.m.

The Rock Valley Police Department, in consultation with the Sioux County Attorney, continued to research the case with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. The investigation found Luevenos received multiple stab wounds prior to the fire.

Police discovered Rodriguez traveled to Utah after the fire. After local law enforcement agents located in Utah, Rodriguez admitted stabbing his grandfather and intentionally setting the fire afterwards, Rock Valley Police Chief Monte Warburton said in a news release Friday.

Rodriguez is charged with first-degree murder, a class A felony, and first-degree arson, a class B felony. He is currently in custody in Utah, awaiting extradition back to Iowa with his bond set at $1 million.

Rock Valley is a Sioux County city of about 3,700.
