SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa | A Spirit Lake man was sentenced Monday to a year in jail for shooting a woman in the leg.
Scott Sidles, 55, had pleaded guilty in Dickinson County District Court in September to a felony charge of reckless use of a firearm and a misdemeanor charge of assault with a dangerous weapon.
District Judge David Lester ordered Sidles to spend a year in jail, minus time already spent in custody, on the misdemeanor assault charge. Lester suspended a 10-year prison sentence and placed Sidles on probation for five years on the felony firearm charge.
Charges of attempted murder, intimidation with a dangerous weapon and willful injury were dismissed.
Sidles admitted during his plea hearing that on Oct. 2, 2016, he fired a .22-caliber pistol recklessly from the driveway of his home in the 1200 block of Fargo Avenue in Spirit Lake and shot his next-door neighbor, who was sitting in a chair on her patio, in the leg.
