SIOUX CITY | A woman is facing charges after authorities say she cashed two fake paychecks totaling more than $2,000 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino -- Sioux City in mid-January.
Torie Lynn Conkey, 30, was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with second-degree theft and two counts of forgery.
Court documents say on Jan. 22 and 23, Conkey approached a cashier's cage at the Hard Rock Casino, 111 Third St., and presented purported paychecks from Inter Bake Foods to be cashed. The cashier verified Conkey's identity and ran the check through a check cashing system, which did not detect the check as fraudulent. The total of the two checks was just over $2,000.
An investigation by a special agent with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation determined both checks were fraudulent and had several differences from Inter Bake Foods' actual payroll checks. A representative of Inter Bake also verified that Conkey had never been employed with the company, documents said.
Conkey was arrested and was being held in the Woodbury County Jail on $10,000 bond.
