SIOUX CITY | A house fire in Sioux City claimed the life of a dog Wednesday morning, while a cat survived.

The Sioux City Fire Rescue was dispatched at 8:08 a.m. for a fire at 1405 S. Rustin St. Fire fighters immediately broke into the house, said assistant fire chief Dan Cougill.

Upon entering, fire fighters found a fire in the kitchen that had reached up into the attic of the house, said Cougill. Smoke and some flames burst through holes in the roof.

No people were in the house during the fire, Cougill said. Fire crews found the cat alive, but the dog perished, Sioux City Animal Control confirmed. The cat was taken to a veterinarian.

Such a tragedy was a sad start to Thanksgiving week, Cougill said.

"It's sad. When we came in this morning it was one of those things going through your mind -- you hope it's a quiet shift," Cougill said. "You just hope it's a slow day, but unfortunately, it started out -- eight minutes into our shift -- with a working house fire."

Cougill said the house -- which was red-tagged by city officials -- sustained $30,000-$40,000 of damage.  The Red Cross was going to find the residents temporary housing, he added.

The cause of the fire was no immediately known, Cougill said.
