LE MARS, Iowa -- The Plymouth County Sheriff's Office has released the name of a man who died Wednesday from a medical condition before his vehicle left the road and struck a tree.

The sheriff's office said in a news release that Douglas Clay, 76, of Le Mars, was found unresponsive in the 16000 block of LeLand Drive north of Le Mars and near the intersections of U.S. Highway 75 and Iowa Highway 60.

Investigators determined that Clay was traveling west on LeLand Drive in a 2005 Chevrolet Uplander when the vehicle left the road and struck a tree. Clay was transported to Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, where he was pronounced dead.

The initial investigation by officers and the Plymouth County Medical Examiner indicates that Clay had a medical condition that caused his death prior to striking the tree, the news release said.
