SIOUX CITY -- The former principal of Morningside Elementary School announced to the Sioux City Community School District in a letter dated Tuesday that she is resigning her position with the district.

In the one-sentence letter, Principal Dawn Stansbury says that she is resigning "under duress." It is not presently clear what Stansbury meant by that phrase.

As of July 1, Stansbury had been replaced at Morningside Elementary by Jarod Mozer. She was offered a position as assistant principal at East Middle School, which she declined.

District spokesperson Mandie Mayo said in an email Wednesday morning that Stansbury did not return to work this year.

“Dawn Stansbury resigned from her position with the Sioux City Community School District (Tuesday) afternoon, therefore, the notice of the school board meeting was cancelled," Mayo said. "Mrs. Stansbury declined an assignment and declined to return to work.”

The district had planned a special meeting Wednesday afternoon in which officials would have considered termination.

Staff at the school return Aug. 20, and students return for classes Aug. 23.

Correction: An earlier version of this story identifies Stansbury as the principal at Morningside. She has not been principal since July 1.
